LIONSBRIDGE FC to HOST D.C. UNITED U23s at POMOCO STADIUM
- Fabled MLS franchise to send its Academy side to the Peninsula to face Lionsbridge FC

(February 23, 2018) – Lionsbridge FC announced the addition of a marquee opponent to its inaugural season schedule at POMOCO Stadium. The team will host the Under-23 squad from the storied Major League Soccer franchise, D.C. United, on Sunday, July 15.
The pre-game festival will begin at 5 p.m., and the game will start at 7 p.m.
Single-game tickets will go on sale in April.
The D.C. United U23 side is part of the D.C. United Academy. Notable products include Bill Hamid, goalkeeper for the US National Team and Danish Superliga side FC Midtjylland, and Andy Najar, Honduran national team player currently with Belgian First Division A club R.S.C. Anderlecht. Graduates of the D.C. United Academy have signed professional contracts in the U.S., Israel, Belgium and Sweden, and play for multiple other national teams, including Jamaica and Ethiopia.
“It will be a special night at POMOCO Stadium as we welcome an opponent that represents an important place in the history of American soccer. It will be a fantastic night for the Peninsula and for our players to showcase their ability against an MLS academy side,” club chairman and co-founder Mike Vest said.
Lionsbridge FC, led by head coach Chris Whalley, will open its inaugural campaign with two road games before making its home debut at POMOCO Stadium on the campus of Christopher Newport University on May 16 against new in-state rival Evergreen FC.
Every home game will be preceded by a two-hour pre-game community festival complete with craft beer from Tradition Brewing Company, food trucks, bounce houses, music and family entertainment. Festival gates open at 5pm and the game begins at 7pm.
Lionsbridge FC has established a constantly growing list of key community partners that include Chick-fil-A, Riverside Regional Medical Center, Nike, Tradition Brewing Company, Mosquito Joe, Off Leash K9 Training, All-Pro Tactical, Kona Ice, Kwolity Productions, O'Doodledoo's Donuts, Parkway Printshop, Clancy and Theys Construction Company, Animal Medical Care Center of Yorktown and the law firm of Jim McNider as well as a numerous area youth soccer organizations such as Baystars FC, Newport News Parks & Recreation, Premiere Sports, Smithfield Soccer Club, Suffolk FC, Tidewater Sharks, VIP United and Yorktown FC.
Lionsbridge FC is a member of the United Soccer League’s PDL, the top pre-professional league in North America. The PDL consists of more than 70 teams across the U.S. and Canada, functioning as Major League Soccer’s primary developmental and player showcase platform. Thirty-six PDL alumni were selected in last month’s MLS Draft.
